Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Gear

Gear is how a 2027 Lara enters a 1996 tomb without a waypoint pyramid. The scanner thinks. The grapple pulls. The axe bites. None of them should shout.

Lara Croft using the wrist grapple on ancient cogs

Scanner

Wikipedia and hands-on reports describe an archaeological scanner that reads artifacts, lore, and optional puzzle clues — closer to Anniversary's journal or Underworld's PDA than to a Metroid logbook, though one preview did use Metroid Prime as a feeling. Jeff Adams: hints through narration and scanner are there if you want them, fully skippable if you do not. Use it to learn a mural. Use it once on a cog you cannot see. Do not use it as a flashlight substitute for curiosity.

Wrist grapple

New, not the magnetic grapples of Legend. Preview players called it Spider-Man-from-the-wrist. It spans gaps, swings, rappels, and yanks puzzle objects, including cogs. Triangle on PlayStation. If a hanging crate or a distant gear looks too convenient, it probably wants this tool. Details of climb-versus-swing modes will be clearer in the traversal guide after launch. For now, treat it as both movement and verb.

Climbing axe and PDA

The ice axe from the Survivor years is still on her, jade necklace too — Adams says those events shaped her, they do not bind her. The axe helps with vines and can counter attacks in some encounters. A PDA is mentioned as a place for slightly different skill attributes, which is likely the menu behind the skill tree. None of this gear replaces looking at the room. If a wall is climbable, it should look climbable. If it does not, you are probably staring at art.

Using tools without turning Lara into a HUD

The design conversation around gear is really a conversation about trust. Jeff Adams does not want a giant interact billboard. The scanner exists because some players still want a whisper. The grapple exists because tombs got bigger and a 1996 jump would look silly across a 2027 chasm. The axe exists because this Lara already lived Siberia and the jungle. Use the whisper, then turn it off. Use the grapple as a verb, not as a winch you spam at every shiny bit of metal. If a tool is solving the room for you, you have the optional assistance too high — drop it, or accept that you wanted a detective story and then bought a GPS.

Button-level detail sits on the controls page. The philosophy of when to swing sits on how to traverse. This page only names the kit so a search for 'scanner Tomb Raider 2027' does not dump you on a trailer recap.

Is the scanner required? +

No. It is optional assistance and a lore reader.

Can the grapple be used in combat? +

Traversal and puzzle use are confirmed. Combat pulls are not a published headline.

Why keep the Survivor axe? +

Continuity. This Lara already lived those years. The axe is a scar you can still swing.

Will gear upgrade like weapons? +

Not stated. Skills may modify how tools feel. The published tree talk focuses on weapons and defenses.
